26 May 2015 – The Secondary School of Engineering Sciences (SSES) of Riga Technical University has concluded an agreement with AS “UPB” on the granting of UPB scholarships to the best SSES 10th Grade students, and on the cooperation on securing extracurricular activities.
Between the beginning of April 2015 and 31 May a public awareness and fund-raising campaign „Inženieris sākas ar citronu“ (An engineer starts with a lemon) by RTU SSES within which the importance of engineering sciences in the Latvian economy development have specially recognized approximately 200 private and legal entities. UPB Holding – one of the leading industrial holdings in Latvia with a strong team of engineers – is among the supporting companies.
“A significant role in the development of UPB play the engineers, who develop new solutions and increase their capacity meeting the requirements of new markets and conditions This allows UPB creating an even greater added value to the end products. To help creating the same effect in all Latvian manufacturing industries we will support the Secondary School of Engineering Sciences of RTU to motivate and inform youth of the importance and capabilities of engineers,” according to Dainis Berzins, chairman of the UPB board.
In addition to qualitative and competitive free education the UPB contributes with a direct support to future experts. During the first year of operation of the School there will be granted 5 monthly scholarships to the best SSES 10th Grade students. UPB will hold also guest lectures and excursions to the company productions plants for the future engineers so that already during the secondary school the adolescents would get an insight into the future possibilities of the industry.
“Involvement of AS “UPB” in the RTU SSES campaign is a significant support to the school and the students who have chosen to link their future with engineering sciences. We are also very happy that AS “UPB” has decided to support the school within its campaign „An engineer starts with a lemon“ demonstrating this project is important not only for the University, but for the society in general, along with the leading companies of the industry,” according to Arturs Zeps, deputy dean in development of RTU.
Together with the supporters during the new study year RTU has established a modern study environment, latest technologies, broad spectrum of extracurricular activities for the students, along with the possibility to live in the dorms and receive scholarships.
To promote the creative development of the future engineers of Latvia and the studying of basic technical sciences Riga Technical University will this autumn open its Secondary School of Engineering Sciences which will grant access to gifted adolescents from urban and rural areas of Latvia to qualitative and competitive education free of charge. The establishment of SSES is supported by SIA LatRosTrans, AS Latvijas Gāze, AS Latvenergo, VISMA, Riga Freeport Authority, AS Severstallat, and the technology partner SIA Lattelecom.
